Swinburne Centenary
Harry Clarke, spine illustration for The Selected Poems of Swinburne (1928)
April 9, 2009 is the hundredth anniversary of the death of Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837 - 1909). In February, I featured Gilbert Alter-Gilbert's massive, 4-part "Lions of Literature" column on Swinburne.
We illustrated the column with Harry Clarke's fantastic but little-seen illustrations, courtesy of Golden Age Comic Book Stories.
Visit the Swinburne Project to sample the poet's work.
Use these links to read the four-part column in order:

Forty-five thousand dollar leftovers
Takei Takeo, Gokuhitei tambo, cello-slide, 1958, 1961
The 45,000 dollars in the title refers to the asking price for a "collection of 138 twentieth-century artist's books by the Japanese author/artist TAKEI Takeo (1894-1982)." If you were wondering what to get me for my birthday... [link for many more images]
The rest of these leftovers -- from children's books all over the world -- come from the International Children's Digital Library -- a site which basically took over my life for a week or so. I feel like the Otto Korsterling images are from another site, but I didn't properly keep track of the location. I think the finger puppets come from the previously-covered Fledgling. I cut and pasted some of the images together.
