    I grew up reading books with illustrations like these. I especially remember a three-volume edition of Andersen's tales, with disturbing, dark illustrations with skulls, hills with faces etc.
    They were by Sturmillo (I recognize the face in the sea that you have posted)and Janusz Stanny

    I remember that the pictures were frightening to me, but also strangely attractive. I am an artist and a writer, and reading books and looking at illustrations for hours when I was a child had a great influence on who I am now.
    I wish I had kept my books but we immigrated to Canada and left them behind. You brought back so many memories.
