  3. Brilliant stuff. If I had to pick a favourite image it'd probably be the Solaris cover.

  4. What a fantastic post. Thank you very much! Being a big fan of the film Stalker, I finally read Roadside Picnic for the first time just a few months ago. I loved it instantly. I tore through it quickly and it haunted me long after I'd finished reading it.

  9. Excellent posting … it's great to see Leo Perutz getting a mention, he made the fantastic genre into something far more universal, a must read!

  11. Great to see this at last but then I think you know I'd say that. Rottensteiner's Fantasy Book was my principal guide for years to the byways of the literary world.

Regarding publishers of the fantastic in the UK, there are a few more besides the venerable Dedalus. Tartarus started out reprinting Arthur Machen but have evolved into a quality publisher of rare ghost stories and landmark reprints of the work of Robert Aickman. David Tibet's Durtro company have produced reissues of some of his cult volumes. New imprint Side Real Press are reissuing Mrs Molesworth and titles by Hanns Heinz Ewers. Finally, my colleagues at Savoy Books have published a number of fantasy works in recent years, including novels by David Britton, a lavish reissue of David Lindsay's Voyage to Arcturus and also Maurice Richardson's eccentric comic tales, The Exploits of Engelbrecht. The latter title--one of Ballard's favourite books, incidentally--is currently being reprinted in a new edition for publication later in the year.

  17. Yes, that is good Cristian.

John, I forgot to thank you for the list of additional publishers. I knew of some but not all of them. I read a little about Exploits of Engelbrecht before, surely on your recommendation, and hope to buy the new edition.
