I can't find the whale! Which must be my just desserts: I hide a whale in every picture book I do and once told this to a group of school children, forgetting that one early book was whale-less (pre-Moby Dick obsession). A small, serious child brought this book up to me, having scoured every page, and said she couldn't find the whale. I don't know what possessed me, but I told her to keep looking. For all I know she's still there. I think of her often.
Sophie, that is hilarious. I have the feeling this girl will be getting in touch with you once she gets online.
I just added a small image of the entire "whale" -- I should have put whale in quotes in my first post, as Aichinger depicts instead a "great fish." This fish looks so good in the book, as a full-bleed 2-page spread.
Love them!
