It's funny- I skipped over Hesse for many years because I dismissed him out of hand as a slightly dry read. Then I picked up "Steppenwolf" and read it during a trip to my Southern hometown in 2004. I felt instant affinity with the Steppenwolf, and I think I'd fit in well with one of those Amon Duul-esque Novalis-cults of the late 60's. haha...Thanks for this post!
I dream about living on a couch on the Faust or Amon Duul compound in the 70s, reading Novalis in English to the acid heads.(My favorite German band might be Agitation Free, the hippiest of the hippies.)
