These are really cool! How'd you find them online, just out of curiosity? Anyway, just thought I'd let you know that the last cover/book, "Ako Rýbárik blúdil po Prahe," is actually a Czech book and artist, not Slovak. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Emily. I found them during a late-night book search a few months ago, but didn't bookmark the site(s). Googling the author names brings up a few Slovak bookstores, but none that jog my memory. I plan to add the info when I find it.
Emily the name of the Book IS in Slovak. Author is Czech origin but this is slovakian edition. (and Mladé letá is slovak publisher)Demeter, Bratislava
I also just fixed the author names, which I had listed last name/first name.
These are so cool! Thanks for posting. I had many friends from Slovakia as a teenager, and some of these reminded me of them. Don't they just *feel* Eastern European?
i agree, really awesome covers!my personal favorite is Jaroslava Blažková, just all the lines and the composition
Love the collection. I noticed you mentioned often forgetting to credit the images you save. Well I had that saame problem, but an awesome site, imgfave, solved that for me. Also don't risk losing all my saved images if my computer dies as they're all now stored online. Just thought you might like to check it out. Makes image saving and crediting so much easier. Love your site, btw. Happy to havbe found it.
Nice collection, good hunting/research skills. The illustrators in Czechoslovakia before 1989 were kind of ventilating the lack of freedom to creativity under the communist regime (though there was a brief release before 1968).There are so many beautiful examples, you should go on and dig deeper, seems like it's resonating on the blogosphere (and there is not much to be found on the internet, especially slovak.) To add the missing information, i searched for the "unkown illustrators" in the slovak online library catalogues (which are of the hidden web nature and won't show up in the usual search engines):Jaroslava Blažková, Jahniatko a grandi - Illustrator Gabriel ŠtrbaAlta Vášová, Po - Illustrator Rudolf Sikora
Really nice to see, thanks for posting!
Thanks you for all the comments.Michal, thanks for your help and encouragement, and I will definitely dig further. Will
the Božena Mačingová cover is so beautiful, I can't stop looking at it. so sad the artist is unknown. the covers at the end remind me a lot of russian, hungarian and east german children's books. like this one (http://www.poetsdelight.de/pics/heiduczek_vogel.jpg) was my absolute favourite. and thank you for this great blog!
Are you still interested in the illustrations from this books, or did you obtain them yourselve in the mean time? I have (the illustrations of ) 10-12 of the books above...Please write me if you want me to scan some of them for you.Great blog indeed.
