Joel Rothberg's Princess of Mars

Illustrator: Joel Rothberg
A Princess of Mars
Edgar Rice Burroughs
"Printed from hand-etched zinc plates in an edition of 500 numbered and signed copies as one of the publications of the Pratt Adlib Press under the direction of Fritz Eichenberg."

I hope this post brings Joel Rothberg out of the "woodwork." He doesn't have much of an online presence. His 2002 solo show, "Etched in Darkness," seems to be remembered by only this review of it. Joel, some of us are ready for your darkness.

About the novel, which has provoked a number of illustrations through the years: link.

The ERB fanclub includes some images from this book. Their file of the above image has some red in it, which makes me want to see the original book even more. You are looking at my scans from a 60s German magazine (Gebrauchsgraphik, Nov. 1965).

Wow--it's nice to see some images that play with the alien-ness of the idea of another planet, rather than going the usual route Burroughs' illustrators go, which is to concentrate on the nude, red-skinned Martian chicks.

Every time I come here it's some new discovery and I'm thankful to finally see it. Fantastic, Will, really. This place is a refuge.

Thanks for all the comments.

Usually I try to locate a copy of a book before I post about it -- but I didn't (couldn't) this time, and now it looks like I've alerted some ebay folks to its existence and I'll never get my grubby paws on it. (The dangers of book blogging.)

But this post got some metafilter love, and that felt real good.
