Forty-five thousand dollar leftovers

The 45,000 dollars in the title refers to the asking price for a "collection of 138 twentieth-century artist's books by the Japanese author/artist TAKEI Takeo (1894-1982)." If you were wondering what to get me for my birthday... [link for many more images]

The rest of these leftovers -- from children's books all over the world -- come from the International Children's Digital Library -- a site which basically took over my life for a week or so. I feel like the Otto Korsterling images are from another site, but I didn't properly keep track of the location. I think the finger puppets come from the previously-covered Fledgling. I cut and pasted some of the images together.

  2. Gorgeous stuff. I wonder whether those Serbian puppets are some variation on Punch and Judy--or whether all traditional puppets just come down to them beating each other up with clubs?

  3. I'm intrigued by "Mom, Dad and Me." What's up with that?

  4. Thanks Mars.

I was wondering if the puppets were enacting some iconic play which I could not see through the freaky dying finger clubs.

Cy, your guess is as good as mine about the Mongolian book and its title. (Actual title is "Father, Mother and me" - I should fix that.) The synopsis is: "This book contains funny and dynamic poems for young children. The lyric little hero discovers his environment and gets to know his relatives - his father, mother, grandmother, sister and others." It won an award in 1972. But this doesn't really help.

  5. What an amazingly eclectic selection. Thanks for your spadework!
To quote you: "I feel like the Otto Korsterling images are from another site, but I didn't properly keep track of the location." - Have you tried doing your searches with the help of an online research tool?
All my students are now totally addicted to Zotero, which is a FireFox add-on. Go to Zotero.org and look at the videos on their site. Did I say it's free?

  6. Thanks Michael.

    I'll give Zotero a try.

I'll also check out your phenomenal-looking site.

  7. Those finger puppets were equally trippy (as the ills for a story from Fledling/Povetarac) for a non-reader.

I think they are from a magazine Neven (Calendula). The author of the children's play the illustrations accompany is Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, the owner of the Neven magazine, a well-known poet.

  8. Found it on Children's Library: they translated the name as Example of a basic Marigoldy
