  1. Ah, Wonderful! Hernandez is one of my absolute favorites but no one I know seems to know who he is.

  2. People sitting in the middle of the first picture are not Sartre and Beauvoir, but french actors Lorant Deutsch and Anna Mouglalis, playing the two philosophers (from "Les amants du Flore", by French TV)...

  3. I suspect there was some willful (and actual) ignorance in my choice of that photo ;>

  5. That's a fine collection of photos, but I feel certain that far more writers drink than smoke. (Pass the gin, okay? or the hash pipe, I suppose.)

  7. Delightful post. Your blog is rhisomatic, no doubt. Hernández’official site has text and book covers in seven languages of translation. http://www.felisberto.org.uy/portugues.html Thank you (and Gilbert).

  8. Felisberto is also one of my favorites. Too bad he's another one who's hard to find in the US. You can get his great The Dirty Dolls though in this anthology of latin american novellas: http://www.amazon.com/Masterworks-Latin-American-Short-Fiction/dp/0064309843

  9. Thanks for the kind comments.

Andrew, I will pull that anthology off the shelf. I bought it because it includes a Joao Rosa story. Quite a collection.

Karla, I think the Hernandez story is going to be part of Gilbert's "Pipe Dreams" anthology of drugs in literature. Surely tons of drunks and stoners in there.

Eweick, I'm going to look those covers up right now. Thanks.
