  1. I turned up a copy of this at Archive.org which can be had for free:

Worth a look also for Dorothy Lathrop's wonderful illustrations. I've long rated De la Mare's short stories, many of which are amazing atmosphere pieces which verge on the supernatural. As weird and uncanny at their best as the later work of Robert Aickman.

  2. Wow, now I need an edition with Lathrop's illustrations -- they are gorgeous.

I recently read De la Mare's "Seaton's Aunt" and it is now one of my favorite stories. I have the two volumes of his stories published by his relative Gilles de la Mare in the UK not so long ago. What are some of your favorites so I can go directly to them?

  4. Seaton's Aunt is first class, and the one I usually recommend to the curious. Off the top of my head I'd also point you toward Crewe, All Hallows, The Trumpet and The Vats, the latter being deeply weird and quite unlike anything else I've read. All of these are in my "Best of" story collection so I imagine they turn up elsewhere.
