Daniel, I hadn't thought about a connection with the UPA film, though now that I watch it again I think the animators could have been influenced by Kauffer's illustrations. (Also, the Borzoi Poe must have been a common edition in the late 40s and early 50s -- the film is from 1953.) I need to look up these folks: From the credits, "Directed by Ted Parmelee, design & color by Paul Julian, animation by Pat Matthews."

You mention dustjackets; the volumes in my slipcase do not have jackets but presumably they did originally. The flyleaf says "1946", no 1951 visible anywhere.
I was so happy to find your blog, which has a remarkable collection of illustrations -- great sleuthing skills. I'll be back again frequently.

Kauffer's illustration works are something else. Yes, this was well worth the $20 and then some. Great post!
