  2. Your post made me remember Maud and Miska Petersham's book The Story Book of Silk. There's a cover image here:

    They did a whole series of similar titles, although the only other one I've seen is The Story Book of Wool. Full-color throughout. Maybe I'll post some images if I get a chance.
