Thanks for the tips! I was about to buy my first Bardin book just the other day. Millipede reprinted his Deadly Percheron recently (I see that it's included in the Omnibus you mention).
I'll be getting Bizarre Books post-haste.
My friend gave a glowing recommendation to Platonov's Fierce and Beautiful World, which seems to have disappeared from NYRB's list, replaced by a collection of eight stories in a new translation, Soul. (Does this make Fierce and Beautiful an NYRB collectible?) Anyway, I'll get on it.
The new NYRB Soul is translated by Robert Chandler; this has the cover to get plus a better translation than the Fierce edition. Chandler is a great Platonov translator, commentator, and advocate.
oh man, that clemens brentano quote about animal strings is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no wonder walser loved his writing. i must see more... thanks for posting!

ReplyDeleteCheck out: John Franklin Bardin's Purloining Tiny or his Penguin omnibus from the late 70s.
Another book about books: Bizarre Books by Russell Ash, released in the 80s but I think revised since then.
And: NY Review of Book's covers of Serge and Platonov books are great.
